What is ITIL
Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a set of concepts and techniques for managing information technology (IT) infrastructure, development, and operations. First developed by the UK government, ITIL is considered the global standard for creating a process/framework for planning, and monitoring the coordination of IT practices and resources with a common goal of achieving operational and strategic projects of an organization.
Developed during the 1980s, to measure service execution, ITIL was not widely adopted until the mid 1990s and ultimately led to a number of standards, including ISO/IEC 20000 which is an international standard covering the IT Service Management elements of ITIL. ITIL is often considered alongside other best practice frameworks such as the Information Services Procurement Library (ISPL), the Application Services Library (ASL), Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM), the Capability Maturity Model (CMM/CMMI), and is often linked with IT governance through Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT).
ITIL practices set out to achieve these goals by:
- Aligning IT services to requirements of the company and its customers
- Optimizing quality of the IT services
- Reducing the IT costs of doing business
DataSynapse Enables ITIL
As the leading provider of real-time infrastructure DataSynapse software dynamically allocates existing computing resources to enterprise applications based on changing business demands. DataSynapse enhances application and application service delivery by automating service level management, availability and capacity management.
DataSynapse FabricServer, FabricServer and VersaVision all lend to enforcing the following ITIL practices and guidelines.
Managing Service Levels: Maximize application delivery and services to users to improve productivity, operational effectiveness and business performance. Measure and report on service levels enables management to maintain service levels and quickly adjust application delivery and services to meet changing business demand.
Manage Capacity Requirements: Automate reporting to define where IT policies can be changed to meet capacity and service level needs By utilizing the shared infrastructure approach of both GridServer (for application services) and FabricServer (for dynamic activation of applications), crreate an uninterruptable capacity management process that dynamically provides command, control and business agility with hard cost reduction in mind.
Maintain Application Availability: Application availability affects the bottom line of businesses The dynamic nature of GridServer enables application services to execute across a grid of resources and virtually eliminates the need monitor application silo uptime. Application services are simply sent to another resource. Similarly FabricServer activates application instances on available resources to meet dynamic changes in application demand.
ITIL provides a systematic approach to the provisioning and management of IT services, from inception through design, implementation, operation and continual monitoring for improvement. The combination of DataSynapse products enables ITIL implementation and practices at all levels.
