While the excitement about cloud computing centers on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and other public infrastructure-as-a-service products, many enterprise infrastructure and operations professionals are taking this concept in-house and building their own internal clouds. These pools of virtual machines can be built upon either virtual server or high-performance computing (HPC) grid foundations and can be operated according to the specific security and process requirements of the business. But to deliver the fundamentally better economic value of cloud architectures within your walls, these clouds require a dynamic platform (or automated workload management) and developer self-service interfaces. There’s a growing list of vendors eager to help you deploy an internal cloud, but be sure you understand that these solutions are more building blocks than complete solutions and must be customized to your specific needs.

DataSynapse application virtualization spreads grid to EC2



Application software management provider DataSynapse has announced an expansion of one of its flagship products onto Amazon's EC2 infrastructure. The company specializes in dynamic application management, meaning it allows enterprise users to manage datacenter application infrastructure, even when virtualized or spread across multiple facilities. With the new release, customers will be able to run DataSynapse engines in the EC2 cloud. In addition the company is releasing a new version of its Federator software aimed at making integration with external clouds seamless to users. The company has two beta customers right now, but is looking for more Federator 1.5 beta users that will be able to extend their environments onto EC2 for free for the remainder of the year.

DataSynapse fattens up customer base and product line



Grid-computing veteran DataSynapse claims it broadened its customer base in 2008 to around 100 global customers running its software over nearly one million CPUs. Founded as a grid-computing company in 2000, the company has since expanded its portfolio to include application- and grid-provisioning and policy-management products FabricServer and, most recently, Federator. In 2009, it plans to announce new products and services to push its grid-management software into the cloud. The company reports 30% year-over-year growth over the last three years.
